In a fast-paced world where audiences are flooded with content, notifications, and noise, attention is fleeting, but emotion still endures.

Meetings and events are some of the few remaining spaces where brands can create fully immersive, human-centered experiences. While Return on Investment (ROI) still matters, the most impactful events today are increasingly measured by something deeper: Return on Experience (ROE), the lasting value created when people feel connected, inspired, and moved.

At Disney Meetings & Events, emotional resonance is intentional. It is created through storytelling, operational excellence, and a deliberate focus on the guest experience. As we explore how meetings and events can create meaning that endures long after the closing session, it’s vital to examine the design mindset that helps Disney transform objectives into outcomes.

We begin with a clear vision, connect emotion to the environment, and turn goals into growth. Our collaborative approach, grounded in innovation and transformative thinking, ensures that every element, whether venue, décor, food, or entertainment, works together to craft moments that truly move people.

By pushing boundaries and designing with purpose, we help planners spark engagement, foster emotional connection, and achieve measurable results.

With insights from three Disney Event Architects, here are the five principles that define Disney’s approach to event design and how they foster emotional resonance and lasting impact.

#1 – Discover the Client’s Wish

Every successful event starts with discovery. Before drawing the first-floor plan or selecting a menu, Disney Event Architects go beyond logistics to understand what truly matters.

As Senior Event Consultant Jessica Rinehimer explains: “We begin every event by discovering the client’s wish. We ask, ‘What’s the one thing you want your attendees to feel when they leave?’ That answer becomes the target of the Guest experience, and it guides how we design the venue.” This focus on emotion changes the planning process. Instead of asking, “What should this event include?” the question becomes, “How should this event feel?”

Venue choice plays a vital role in shaping that feeling. From iconic theme park destinations to elegant resort ballrooms, every location is carefully chosen or transformed to support the emotional core of the experience.

For some groups, that might mean turning the parks into a collaborative playground with a team-building scavenger hunt. For others, it could be a black-tie celebration ending in a private toast under fireworks at EPCOT World Showcase.

Show Director Joop Katana recalls a standout experience in which attendees were led through a symbolic forest of towering trees, designed to make them feel small upon entry and empowered by night’s end. “It’s about creating a world they step into, where emotion leads.” When the emotional target is clear from the start, every design decision has purpose, and emotional resonance becomes intentional.

#2 – Connect to the Heart of the Story

Once the client’s wish is defined, the story begins. At Disney Meetings & Events, storytelling goes beyond a keynote or theme – it becomes the connecting thread that runs through every touchpoint. From pre-arrival communications to immersive openers and personalized signage, story-driven design fosters continuity and meaning.

Customization is essential. Every visual, message, and interaction is crafted to reflect the client’s brand and help attendees feel personally engaged. Jessica Rinehimer explains, “Innovation and customization are how we turn a standard event into a one-of-a-kind experience. When attendees feel emotionally connected, they're more likely to lean in, to engage, be inspired, and carry that momentum forward.”

Storytelling also appears in unexpected places. A Toy Story-themed dining experience blends nostalgia with creative presentation. An incentive invitation comes as a custom 1920s newspaper celebrating attendee achievements. Even guest check-in can become a moment of delight.

When every lived moment contributes to a cohesive narrative, attendees don’t just hear a message – they live it.

#3 – Inspire Each Other

Emotional resonance rarely stems from a single idea. It results from collaboration. Disney Meetings & Events thrives on teamwork among a multidisciplinary group of Disney Event Architects comprised of culinary experts, technical producers, entertainment specialists, and logistics professionals, and more each bringing a unique lens to the experience. Joop Katana explains, “When we invite each other into the process, we build something greater than the sum of its parts. We encourage every Cast Member involved to bring their best ideas to the table – to add their mark.”

That collaboration can happen through a brainstorming session at the Disney Creative Studio, a venue walkthrough that sparks new ideas, or a creative lab that fosters experimentation. For Executive Chef Christian Rumpler, inspiration often begins with storytelling through food. “We’re a chapter in the story,” he says. “Depending on the event theme, we shape the menu to reflect the essence of what the client wants to express.”

From thoughtfully themed menus to meals centered around a single, extraordinary ingredient, culinary design becomes another emotional connection point. Even entertainment benefits from this shared creativity. Joop recalls custom characters developed through improvisation, coached to embody a company’s brand voice, creating spontaneous, one-on-one moments of insight and laughter that humanize an organization in ways no slide deck ever could.

#4 – Design with Intention & Imagination

At Disney Meetings & Events, design is more than decoration; it’s a strategic tool for transformation. Every choice, from stage layout to the pace of programming, is intentional. Each element is designed to support how guests feel, move, and engage throughout the experience. “You can’t template out an unforgettable event,” Joop explains. “It takes discovery, collaboration, and the creative bravery to try something new.”

That bravery manifests in details both big and small: a magical mirror hidden inside an enchanted forest that reacts to guest interaction, or a breathtaking replica of the aurora borealis created with lighting and lore. Chef Rumpler describes the culinary side as an ongoing process of research and development. “We’re constantly innovating through flavor, texture, and design,” he says.

Intention grounds the experience in meaning. Imagination sets it apart. Together, they transform ordinary moments into lasting memories.

#5 – Walk the Path

Emotional resonance depends on flow. The principle known as Walk the Path positions Disney Event Architects as guardians of the guest journey. Every step, from arrival to final send‑off, is thoughtfully choreographed to remove friction and create ease.

Walking the path means anticipating needs, smoothing transitions, and setting emotional tone at every moment. The goal is simple: Guests should feel, “Disney has me covered.”

Jessica Rinehimer shares an example of designing with empathy. “When a client brought many attendees with young families, Disney Event Architects built value into the weekend through intentional programming like face painting, hair braiding, and Character experiences to ease pressure and reduce out-of-pocket costs.”

When the path is designed with care, guests stop navigating and start experiencing.

Why Emotional Resonance Creates Long‑Lasting Event Impact

When storytelling, operational excellence, and the guest journey come together, the result is more than just a successful event – it’s a meaningful experience.

People might forget agendas and bullet points, but they remember how an experience made them feel. Those feeling drives recall, trust, advocacy, and long-term bonds. This is where ROE becomes real. It’s where emotional resonance turns into business impact.

Let’s create magic.

At Disney Meetings & Events, these five principles are more than just a framework – they’re the driving force behind every experience we craft. By understanding the client’s wishes, connecting with the core of the story, inspiring each other, designing with purpose and imagination, and following the path, we transform moments into meaningful memories and turn events into lasting impressions. Because when you design for emotion, you're not just creating an event, you're creating a moment that truly matters.
